Amnistía Internacional ha utilizado la canción "Get up stand up" en alguna campaña.
Bob Marley (1945-1981) fue un músico jamaicano y seguidor del rastafarianismo, un movimiento religioso y sociopolítico de defensa del panafricanismo (basado en la reivindicación de los derechos de las personas africanas o de orígen africano). El centro del rastafarismo reside en algunas naciones caribeñas como Trinidad y Tobago, Dominica y Granada, además de Jamaica.
Bob Marley és el cantante más conocido de reggae, la música jamaicana representativa del rastafarismo. El reggae fue el resultado de la influencia del soul sobre el ska, que a su vez era el resultado  de la fusión de la música folk tradicional jamaicana, el rythm & blues estadounidense y el jazz.
La letra de "Get up stand up" es un claro ejemplo de la posición militante en general del rastafarismo y de Bob Marley en particular.
El rastafarismo ha sido motivo de algunas controversias, en la medida que algunos músicos jamaicanos han hecho declaraciones abiertamente homofóbas (en la mayor parte de los países latinoamericanos la homosexualidad no está penalizada, pero no obstante persisten importantes actitudes homofóbicas, enquistadas por motivos religiosos y culturales).
